Gerry
started Irish fiddle in Manchester at the age
of eight and was gigging as a paid musician by
the age of eleven having developed prowess on
a multitude of instruments including accordion,
banjo, mandolin and guitar to name a few. These
formative years saw him win numerous championship
titles including the All Britain and ITV'S "Young
Musician of the Year" titles.
Moving
to Ireland at the age of fourteen Gerry went on
to study music at University College Cork. It
was during this period that he was filmed for
the TV series "Bringing it all back home."
Gerry
joined Irish/world music band Sin É in
1998 who caught the attention of Paddy Maloney
(of The Chieftains). The band was consequently
signed to his record label (Wicklow Records/BMG)
to record the album "Deep Water Drop Off"
which fused Irish, jazz, Asian and elements of
Dance programming
As well as his own solo projects and his work
with Sin É Gerry has also performed and
recorded with the likes of Micheál Ó
Súilleábháin, Laurie Anderson,
Van Morrison and the Irish International Folk
Ballet Company.
Gerry
tours extensively and has performed all around
the world including British council tours of Syria
and Kazikhstan to performances in Moscow, Ukraine
and Croatia with the Irish Folk Ballet company
to work for the Disney corporation in Hollywood.
Gerry has just completed recording on the soundtrack
to the forthcoming Irish film "Conspiracy
of Silence" (directed by John Deery)
Teaching
has also been central to Gerry's career and since
graduating from UCC with an honours degree in
ethnomusicology he has taught classes in Irish
music around the globe including seminars in the
University of Damascus and the Jazz School in
Almatti, "The Fiddle festival" in Belfast,
and throughout the British Isles. Gerry currently
teaches classes at Southwark Irish Centre, St
Joseph's RC school in south London as well as
maintaining a busy private teaching schedule.
